Jan was principally involved in raising funds to assist people hiding in Friesland. In addition, he was one of the three members of the honorary council of the Frisian Resistance, a unique organization that dealt with complaints from fugitives or foster families and offered advice and solutions to problems. Apart from his Resistance work, from March 1943 on, Jan and his wife, Johanna, provided shelter for 42-year-old Nanette Schrijver, a Jewish nurse from Amsterdam, when she was brought to them by Krijn van den Helm*, one of Jan's subordinates. On June 30, 1944, Jeanne Evenhuis, Jan and Johanna's daughter, visited an unsafe address in Amsterdam. She was arrested and her parents were notified. Jan decided to go to Amsterdam to try to buy his daughter's release. He turned up with a large amount of money and this aroused the suspicions of the Germans, who subsequently apprehended him. However, the SD on Euterpestraat found no evidence linking Jan and the Frisian Resistance. In the meantime, Nanette was temporarily relocated to the Nijdam* family in Heerenveen, Friesland. Two weeks later, the SD in Groningen made a big catch. During a raid on the headquarters of the Frisian Resistance at the Tamminga cheese warehouse in Leeuwarden, they seized numerous goods and also the administrative workers of Jan's NSF group. Jeanne and Jan were being held in Amsterdam at the time and had been led to believe that their release was imminent. However, after the raid on the NSF base, proof of Jan's connection to the Resistance was found and instead of being freed Jan and Jeanne were sent to the notorious Scholtenshuis in Groningen. While interned there, Jan was severely tortured during an interrogation. From there, he was moved to the Vught concentration camp, where he was executed by a firing squad on August 18, 1944. On January 28, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Evenhuis and his wife, Johanna Hendrika Roelina Evenhuis-Hooghoudt, as Righteous Among the Nations.
