In the 1930s, they worked as editors for the Querido publishing house, which enabled many exiled German writers to publish their works. Frits later became the head of the Social-Democratic publishing house, de Arbeiders Pers, and after the war he founded his own publishing house. In 1942, Frits founded de Haas, an illegal intelligence network that maintained contact with about 1,500 people. Aside from his work in de Haas, Frits found hideouts for Jews and smuggled others over the border into Belgium, France, and Switzerland. He also provided his fleeing charges with money and false identity cards and the hidden ones with food coupons and financial support. Frits and Alice hid people in their own home too. They were personally responsible for the rescue of about 40 Jews. Rebecca de Vries was one of the many people who owe their lives to the von Eugens and their fellow Resistance workers. Frits was later among the founding members of the Amsterdam Vrije Groepen, a federation of illegal groups that did not wish to be associated with the ideological and religious Resistance organizations. He headed the groups intelligence network, Rolls Royce, and sent out agents to infiltrate prisons, camps, and SD headquarters in order to collect important information for the Resistance. It has been estimated that the organization carried vital information that benefited about 15,000 hidden people. Frits was highly motivated and constantly endangered his own life in order to rescue others. Herta Schnall, who was hidden in his home, testified that the Gestapo often searched the property but never found Frits. After the war, Frits wrote a short book entitled R.R. Ontstaan en werken van de koeriers--- en inlichtingdienst RR, which chronicled the secret wartime activities of the organization. On June 26, 1977, Yad Vashem recognized Johan Frederik Josef Rudolf von Eugen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
