Van Elburg, married, was deputy manager of a cheese factory in Enschede (prov. Overijssel). With the increasing anti-Jewish measures, and especially after the onset of the deportations of the Jews in the summer of 1942, van Elburg focused on helping Jews. Being a Calvinist, van Elburg connected with Reverend Overduin*, who had created a network of people in and around Enschede who were willing to help the persecuted Jews. Van Elburg took 15-year-old (Lise) Lotte Lehrman (later, Anholt), a refugee from Germany, to the farm of Hendrik and Diena Nijhuis* in nearby Boekelo, where seven Jews were already hiding in the chicken coop, and where earlier he had taken 22-year-old Emanuel Anholt. Lotte had come to Boekelo in order to learn farming before her originally planned immigration to the Land of Israel; however, the war caught her before she could leave. Van Elburg kept in touch with most of those in hiding, providing food coupons, or forged papers, bringing them news from their families if possible and supporting them morally. He thus took upon himself to inform Lotte that her family, except for her younger brother, Bernard, had been arrested and sent to the Westerbork transit camp. Bernard was not at home at the time of the raid on the Lehrmans home. Van Elburg immediately traveled to Amsterdam, picked up Bernard and took him to the chicken coop as well. Even though their conditions were extremely difficult, the Jews in hiding somehow managed. In June 1943, however, they were betrayed. All were arrested and deported to concentration camps in Poland. Only Lotte and Bernard, who both ended up in Bergen Belsen, survived. Emanuel Anholt at the time was not in the coop and was thus saved. In spite of this terrible event, van Elburg continued his resistance activities and help to Jews. A month later, he too was betrayed and on July 26, 1943 he was arrested. In March 1944, he was taken to the Vught Concentration camp in the south of the Netherlands (KZ Herzogenbusch) from where in September 1944 he was transferred to KZ Sachsenhausen and later KZ Dachau, from where he returned a very sick man after the liberation in May 1945. He died soon afterwards on December 19, 1945. On October 7, 2007, Yad Vashem recognized Frederik Jan van Elburg as Righteous Among the Nations. |
