From there, Versteeg took Miriam to Johan and Wijnanda (Wijntje) van Ek in Ede, Gelderland, where she stayed for two and a half years. Johan and Wijntje were motivated purely by their humanitarianism. “The van Eks were wonderful people,” Miriam recalled in her testimony to Yad Vashem. “Of course, during those two and a half years there were many stressful days, and twice the rumor spread that my identity had been discovered. Towards the end of the war, the Germans billeted in the house and I had to move elsewhere. Then, I hid with other people, such as Coby van Straalen*.” Towards the end of the war, the Germans used the second floor of the van Eks’ home as headquarters, but Miriam nevertheless continued to live on the ground floor with her foster parents. On July 10, 1973, Yad Vashem recognized Johan van Ek and his wife, Wijnanda van Ek-van Deelen, as Righteous Among the Nations.
