Max was an active member of the anti-Nazi underground who acted as a courier, passing messages between underground workers. In January 1943, underground member Jeanette E. van Zutphen-Beurs brought a one-and-a-half-year-old Jewish child, Mia Bertha Loonstein, to the Eichenbergers' home. Mia's parents were hiding with Jeanette's parents in Varsseveled and the Eichenbergers took in the little girl. Anthonie L.N. van Zutphen*, Jeanette's husband, was also a member of the underground and he dealt with the procurement of food cards for Mia and made sure contact was maintained between her and her parents. The Loonsteins, who knew where their daughter was being hidden, asked to pay towards her upkeep. The Eichenbergers initially refused, but afterwards agreed to accept a symbolic sum of 20 guilders a month. On February 13, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Max Eichenberger and his wife, Metje Eichenberger-van Keijzerswaard, as Righteous Among the Nations.
