Deworas parents both died in an extermination camp and, after the war, a court awarded custody of her to Johanna and Cornelia rather than to a surviving aunt and uncle. Dewora stayed with them until she was 18, supported by her fathers estate. Johanna and Cornelia brought her up as a Protestant, but, as they had promised Deworas father, never had her baptized.
