Karl Claus, a baker in Brunssum, Limburg, was a member of the Socialist Party, which was illegal under the Nazi regime. Johanna Claus-van Bree was the sister of the two van Bree brothers who were active in the underground. Karl and Johanna hid Robert Duis of Amsterdam, a young child whose parents, Simon and Greta Duis, were hidden by Floris and Gertrud van Bree* in Brussum and later by Theodorus and Mechtilde Leenders* of nearby Hoensbroek. The Claus couple was childless and treated Robert like a son. They took him to see his parents every week and he survived the war in their home. After the war, Robert and his parents stayed in close touch with Karl and Johanna and in their old age Robert cared for them as if they were his own parents.
On July 4, 1999, Yad Vashem recognized Karl Claus and his wife, Johanna Claus-van Bree, as Righteous Among the Nations.
