When his parents were deported, 16-year-old Ezra Jehudai was left on his own. During the summer of 1943, Petrus Dudink found him and took him into his home. Petrus, a vegetable grower in Zwaagdijk, North Holland, his wife, and six children were Catholic. In 1942, the village priest had asked them to initiate a project to place children from the big cities, including Jews, with families in the area. Thus, from this time on, Petrus and his wife, Gertrude, had been deeply involved in rescue efforts. Sometimes, their home was full because people who could not cope with difficult wards brought them back to the Dudinks, where they remained until Petrus found new hideouts for them. Gertrude always managed to provide large amounts of food for the many starving fugitives who passed through their home. Being a vegetable grower, Petrus managed to provide food for the enlarged household. Petrus later became the local resistance leader. In 1944, the Dudinks were warned that the Germans knew about their rescue activities and they were advised to go into hiding. The whole family split up. Ezra later recalled that he fled with some of his hostsÂ’ children and they wandered between the homes of grandparents, uncles, relatives, and neighbors. Dudink tried to continue with his rescue efforts while wandering about. Even the German threat that they had pictures of his children and would find him through them did not deter him. After the war, when the Dudinks returned home, they discovered that the Germans and their Dutch collaborators had looted all of their belongings, burned their national flag, and ruined the vegetable garden. The family, however, remained intact. During the war, the Dudinks saved the lives of many Jews. Petrus and Gertrude were motivated by their love of Jews and of mankind. The Dutch government honored them both with the Resistance Memorial Cross and Stichting 1940-1945 recognized Petrus as a pillar of the resistance.
On September 10, 1995, Yad Vashem recognized Petrus Dudink as Righteous Among the Nations.
