In 1943, Elizabeth Meima*, an active member of the underground, brought Paula Hiegentlich-Goedhart, a diabetic woman aged 54, to the Boskloppers home for safekeeping. Remmelt and Johanna hid Paula for two years, until the liberation in May 1945, despite the fact that she required large quantities of medication because of her illness, which made hiding her more difficult. Jacob Hiegentlich, Paula’s son, who occasionally slept at the Boskloppers’ home during the war, testified that the Boskloppers cared for his mother with devotion and gave her “a warm and loving home.” They managed to provide her with medicine and special food and they never asked for financial remuneration. According to Jacob, the Boskloppers also hid at least another six Jews during the war. Remmelt and Johanna acted out of faith and religious piety, believing that they were carrying out God’s commandment: “And thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” On September 27, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Remmelt Bosklopper and his wife, Johanna Bosklopper-te Hennepe, as Righteous Among the Nations.
