She was put in touch with Ferdinand Bosschart, also from their home town, who arranged to meet them on September 17, 1942, at the railway station in Amersfoort and take them to Jan and Aaltje Versluis*, who lived in Zeist and agreed to hide them. Ferdinand kept in touch with them, making sure they had what they needed, and even organized Hebrew lessons at his home for a number of Jewish children in the area for a while until it became too dangerous. He acted on his own initiative, without the support of any underground group, motivated by what he and his wife saw as their Christian duty. In August 1944, when Eva and Hertha had to leave the VersluisesÂ’ because the family situation had changed, Ferdinand picked them up and found them alternative addresses. (Shulamit had already been moved to another family.) He took Hertha to the Verheuls*, where she stayed until the end of the war, while her mother hid elsewhere. On December 5, 1985, Yad Vashem recognized Ferdinand Martinus Bosschart and his wife, Agatha Johanna Bosschart-van der Zwalm, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
