On February 11, 1943, Cor Krijger* took Meta Vomberg (later Denneboom) to Zutphen, Gelderland, to hide with an elderly couple, Hendrika (Rieka) and Anton Hobrink, their daughter, Antonia (Toos), and her husband, Johannes Hendrikus (Hendrik) Bouwman. Both men were unskilled laborers and even their combined income was small. Anton, who traveled around on his bicycle pruning hedges at estates, occasionally received wheat, butter, milk, or eggs in addition to his salary. He grew some potatoes and vegetables behind his house. Hendrik, who originally worked in a hardware store, later became a janitor at the regional hospital. When Meta first came to the Hobrinks, she paid 20 guilders a week for room and board and when her money ran out she paid with her extra nurse's clothes and some jewelry. When she had nothing left to pay with, she stayed on as a welcome guest. Most of the time, Meta remained upstairs in the attic, knitting, sewing, peeling potatoes, or reading the Bible. In the evenings, she would join the family downstairs to hear the latest news. At first, she slept with Toos and her husband at the foot of their box bed, but later she slept with Anton and Rieka in their box bed. The front door of the Hobrinks' home was always locked to prevent unwanted visitors. Every Friday afternoon a tub of water was brought up to the attic so that Meta could wash before the Jewish Sabbath. In the spring of 1945, half of Zutphen was liberated. The street where the Hobrinks lived was barricaded by the Germans and constantly under fire, so the whole family moved to the neighboring village of Voorst. After the liberation, the Hobrink family insisted that Meta stay another week to muster her courage before starting to live a normal life again. Meta and Toos remained friends after the war.
On January 29, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Anton Hobrink, his wife, Hendrika Hobrink-Assie, their daughter, Antonia Gardina Bouwman-Hobrink, and her husband, Johannes Hendrikus Bouwman, as Righteous Among the Nations.
