At the end of the year, the Bouwmans took the first Jews into their home: Joop Wolff and his wife, Sien, who were brought from The Hague by Pieters relative, Reverend Theo Vermeulen, who was active in the underground. Two months later they were followed by three members of the van Coevorden family from Strijen: Ruben, 60, his wife, Sophie de Jong, 54, and his sister Rebecca, who was 53. They all slept in a room adjacent to the engine room and spent their days in the Bouwmans living room. The Vermeulens were the only ones who knew of their presence. On June 21, 1943, the Germans caught all of them. The Wolffs and the van Coevordens were put on a transport and perished in Sobibor and Auschwitz. Pieter was taken to the Schevingen prison, from where, in October 1943, he was moved to the Vught concentration camp. He stayed there until April 20, 1944, when he was unexpectedly released on the occasion of Hitlers birthday. He had been badly beaten and maltreated and remained a broken man for many years afterwards. On November 30, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Pieter Cornelis Bouwman and his wife, Aagje Bouwman-Schelling, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
