In the spring of 1943, Johanna Zion, her brother Julius Jacob, and 26 other Jews were betrayed. They were put on a transport from which Julius managed to escape. He immediately turned to Reverends Jakob Koers* and Dirk Somsen*, his earlier underground contacts, and begged them to help him find a hideout. Several days later, he went into hiding in the attic of a church. Soon after, Julius and two of his sisters, Mink and Frieda, were taken to the Mateman* family in Eibergen, where they remained until the end of the war. Two other brothers, Josef and Salomon, also managed to escape after being betrayed. They too turned to Koers and Somsen and they were sent into hiding with Hendrik and Ali ter Brake, also in Eibergen. They stayed there for two years, until the liberation in May 1945. On September 18, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrik ter Brake and his wife, Ali ter Brake-te Lintel-Hekkert, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
