The family traveled south to Heerlen, Limburg, where Robert was left with Karl and Johanna Claus* until the liberation. Johanna asked her brother and sister-in-law, Floris Jan and Gertrude (Gertie) van Bree, if they would hide the Duises for a short period. The van Brees were members of the Social Democratic Labor Party and had joined the Resistance at the very start of the German occupation. They agreed to take in the Jewish couple, who were unable to leave Holland and thus stayed with the van Brees in Brunssum for 17 months. The van Bree brothers owned a large transportation business and used their vehicles to take Jews from Amsterdam to hiding places in Friesland and Limburg. In addition to hiding other refugees in their home, Floris Jan and Gertie secured false papers, food coupons, and hiding places for fugitives. In December 1943, ten Jews who had been assisted by Floris Jan were seized. Floris Jan, who feared that his name would be revealed, brought the Duises to Theo and Tilla Leenders*. Meanwhile, Floris Jan and Gertie went into hiding themselves and their two children were sent to their grandparents in Treebeek. On July 4, 1999, Yad Vashem recognized Floris Jan van Bree and his wife, Gertrude van Bree-de Groot, as Righteous Among the Nations.
