When the war broke out, Jan Lammert, his wife Aukje, and their four children, were living in the Frisian village of Ureterp. Many of the inhabitants of this village were involved in underground activities and agreed to help Jewish people. Jan and Aukje participated in this effort by hiding the teenager Robert van Zanten, born in 1928. Jan fell in one of the last battles of the German occupation. The Germans had already withdrawn from the village, but decided to return in a surprise attack. During the ensuing fight between the German soldiers and the local Resistance, Jan and several others were killed.
On October 22, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Lammert van den Broek and his wife, Aukje van den Broek-Lampe, as Righteous Among the Nations.
