In April 1943, S. J. Colthof and his wife, who was pregnant with their first child, had to find a hiding place immediately. In despair, they contacted their friend Anna van der Aa*, a teacher. Anna had a colleague named Petrus van den Broek, and he and his wife, Wilhelmina, immediately agreed to shelter the Colthofs in their home in St. Oedenrode, North Brabant. As the Colthofs did not eat unkosher meat, Wilhelmina cycled daily to buy fresh eggs. Wilhelmina and Anna also prepared everything necessary for the imminent birth, as if there were no war on. On October 10, 1943 (Yom Kippur), baby Esther was born. Two hours later, Wilhelmina took the baby to a monastery for safekeeping and in the following months traveled there every day with a bottle of milk from the child’s own mother. Meanwhile, in the van den Broeks’ home, Mrs. Colthof was nursed as if she were in a first-class hospital. Mr. Colthof later recalled the moral support that Wilhelmina gave them, comforting them when they got dowhearted. In his testimony to Yad Vashem, S. J. Colthof wrote that his wife received the best care and the best food from their hosts, both before and after the birth of their child, even though the van den Broeks were living on a meager teacher’s salary. The Colthofs did add a very nominal amount towards their upkeep. In August 1944, when it became too dangerous to remain in hiding with the van den Broeks, Anna took them to a new hideout.
On February 26, 1974, Yad Vashem recognized Petrus Antonius van den Broek and his wife, Wilhelmina van den Broek-Lunteren, as Righteous Among the Nations.
