Dedemsvaart is near Nieuwlande, Drenthe, where rescuing Jews became a way of life during the war. The Stegeman home became a way station for Jews on their way to permanent hiding places. Diens daughter, Gerdijna (also called Dien, later Broenink), took charge of running the household and of caring for the fugitives. On June 9, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Frederik Hendrik Stegeman, his sister, Berendina Johanna Wilhelmina Homan-Stegeman, and her daughter, Gerdijna Johanna Gertruida Broenink-Homan, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
