Herman Gomperts was 13 years old when he was forced to leave his parents and go into hiding. At first, he was taken to a family in Leiden, South Holland, where he stayed for nine months. On April 3, 1943, the underground transferred him to the home of Tijmen and Antje Bronda in the farming village of Farmsum in Groningen. Tijmen and Antje had five children of their own and warmly welcomed Herman into their home, treating him like another family member. The Brondas represented Herman to their neighbors as a son of relatives sent to their home in the country because of the scarcity of food in the cities. The Brondas were motivated by a genuine desire to safe Herman's life; however, they took enormous risks in sheltering him. Herman stayed with the Brondas until the end of the war.
On December 23, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Tijmen Bronda and his wife, Antje Bronda-Kuper, as Righteous Among the Nations.
