The Rosenberg family of Eindhoven, North Brabant, decided that they had better go into hiding. Earlier that year, on January 27, they had had a baby son, Hans. In September 1942, Hans's grandmother was hospitalized at the St. Joseph Hospital in Eindhoven. While there, she met Marie de Bruyn, a nun and a nurse. Marie helped devise a plan to get the infant Hans to a safe shelter. As arranged, in October of the same year, the Rosenbergs brought Hans to the hospital and left him there as a foundling. Marie than took the baby to her brother and sister-in-law, Henrikus and Johanna de Bruyn, in Helmond, North Brabant, on October 3, 1942. Henrikus was working in the social welfare department of the municipality of Helmond. His work in this capacity had led to his being featured on the German's blacklist as a suspect involved in the disappearance of food coupons from the office. Despite the precarious position he was already in, and the fact that he was the father of four daughters, his wife was handicapped, and he could barely afford to feed his family, he agreed, to shelter Hans in his home without any payment. In fact, the arrival of the nine-month-old baby actually caused great happiness in the de Bruyn family. The four girls, the eldest of whom was 21-year-old Jo, doted on the infant. Hans remained in the safety of the de Bruyn family home until November 1944, when the south of Holland was liberated and his parents came out of their hiding place and took him back. On December 13, 1994, Yad Vashem recognized Henrikus de Bruyn and his wife, Johanna Maria de Bruyn, as Righteous Among the Nations.
