One of her former colleagues, Mr. Rozijn, suggested that the girl be hidden at the Amsterdam home of his sister-in-law, Cornelia van der Bult. In the winter of 1942--1943, Estella and her husband, who were later deported, brought their daughter to the van der Bults' home. Johannes and Cornelia van der Bult, who had one daughter, were active members of the Resistance. They were involved in bringing money, food coupons, documentation and other items to Jews in hiding. They often hid fugitives for one or more nights in their small three-room apartment, including a Dr. Israel. Through their connections with the Joodsche Raad (Jewish Council) and other contacts, they sent parcels and letters to Jews who were incarcerated in camps and prisons in Holland. Despite the fact that one of the van der Bults' neighbors was an antisemite, Jeannine stayed with the family until the danger was simply too great. When the couple was warned of an imminent house search, Mr. Rozijn found two temporary hiding places for the girl. Jeannine was then brought to the Klanderman family farm, where she remained until the liberation. Cornelia then brought the girl back to Amsterdam and later, in 1945, in accordance with her deceased mother's wishes, Jeannine was sent to live with her aunt in the United States, where she stayed for ten years. On October 29, 1997, Yad Vashem recognized Johannes van der Bult and his wife, Cornelia van der Bult, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
