However, the parents were betrayed and deported and a concerted effort was made to ensure the safety of the two girls. The hiding place at the Haks in Gorinchem, South Holland, was soon considered to be too risky. Adriaan Burghout, an employee in the HaksÂ’ shop, consequently took the two girls to his parentÂ’s home in nearby Giessen, where they were sheltered for many months. Antonie and Adriana Burghout took excellent care of the girls but the situation all around them forced the fugitives to seek another hideout after awhile. In the course of their many moves, Adriaan, and often the Hak sons, would assist the girls by transporting them on their bicycles. On February 12, 1991, Yad Vashem recognized Adriaan Burghout and his parents, Antonie Burghout and Adriana Burghout-Colijn, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
