Aantekeningen: | Last Name: Burghout First Name: Adriana Maiden Name: Colijn Date of Birth: 12/02/1891 Date of death: 29/06/1976 Rescuer's fate: survived Nationality: THE NETHERLANDS Gender: Female Place during the war: Giessen, Noordbrabant, The Netherlands Rescue Place: Giessen, Noordbrabant, The Netherlands Rescue mode: Arranging shelter File number: File from the Collection of the Righteous Among the Nations Department (M.31.2/5019) The Hak* family were especially active in the Resistance and attempted to rescue the Sachs family, a father, mother, and two daughters, Hanne Lore and Marianne. However, the parents were betrayed and deported and a concerted effort was made to ensure the safety of the two girls. The hiding place at the Haks in Gorinchem, South Holland, was soon considered to be too risky. Adriaan Burghout, an employee in the Haks' shop, consequently took the two girls to his parent's home in nearby Giessen, where they were sheltered for many months. Antonie and Adriana Burghout took excellent care of the girls but the situation all around them forced the fugitives to seek another hideout after awhile. In the course of their many moves, Adriaan, and often the Hak sons, would assist the girls by transporting them on their bicycles. On February 12, 1991, Yad Vashem recognized Adriaan Burghout and his parents, Antonie Burghout and Adriana Burghout-Colijn, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
