When the Germans stepped up the frequency of the razzias, Katharina offered David a hiding place in her own apartment. Even after he apprised her of the risks involved, Katharina insisted that he should still move in. From September 1942, he hid in Katharina's third-floor apartment, where he was later joined by his parents, Abraham and Eva Ketellapper. Seven other families lived on the same floor and the narrow street meant that neighbors from across the street could easily see what was going on. The danger was particularly acute since an NSB member, who had already sabotaged local Resistance efforts, was living in the building opposite. Katharina's free time was devoted to finding food for her three secret guests. This she funded from her own salary and a small contribution from the Resistance. Even in difficult times, however, there was always food on the table. For two and a half years, until the liberation in May 1945, Katharina withstood the daily stress, and sacrificed much of her family and social life in order to minimize risks. Despite her increasing isolation, she was driven by her religious conviction that she must help the persecuted. On July 26, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Katharina Gerbrechta Busschbach-Schmüll as Righteous Among the Nations. |
