Aantekeningen: | Last Name: Brueckmann First Name: Helene Maria Emilie Maiden Name: Kroeller Date of Birth: 23/07/1889 Date of death: 08/10/1947 Rescuer's fate: survived Nationality: THE NETHERLANDS Gender: Female Place during the war: Ede, Gelderland, The Netherlands Rescue Place: Ede, Gelderland, The Netherlands Rescue mode: Hiding Supplying basic goods File number: File from the Collection of the Righteous Among the Nations Department (M.31.2/2717) In 1942, when Paul Jakob Hellman was seven years old, he and his parents went into hiding. Paul stayed at various places until his father took him to Helene Bruckmann-Kroller. Helene, a widow and mother of six, was living in a large house in Ede, Gelderland after the Germans had confiscated her farm in nearby Harskamp. While Paul was staying with her, Helene referred to him as her nephew and arranged for him to receive schooling. Paul remained with Helene until her death in 1947, as his father perished in Sobibor and his mother, who survived, was not able to look after him straight away. After Helene died, Pauls mother fought the Bruckmann-Kroller children for custody of her son, and won. During the war, Helene helped many other Jews by bringing them food. Her actions were made even riskier by the fact that her brother was a Nazi, her elder son had committed suicide during the war, and she even had Germans living in her house. On November 24, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Helene Maria Emilie Brückmann-Kröller as Righteous Among the Nations. |
