Mies was involved in providing false documents and food coupons to the Jews hiding in her parents home in Breda, North Brabant, and also to numerous other fugitives whom the family rescued and sent on to other safe places during the course of the war. Joseph Rene Chitz (who changed his name to Joseph Rene after the war) was one of the Jews who found a permanent hiding place with the Prins* family through the Faes family. In his testimony to Yad Vashem, Joseph wrote: The son and daughter of the Faes family actually quit their jobs and devoted the entire duration of the Nazi occupation to this very activity---saving Jews from the clutches of the Gestapo and the Grüne Polizei. On June 7, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Maria Elisabeth. de Cler-Faes as Righteous Among the Nations. |
