The underground had stipulated that 30 guilders a week was the sum a fugitive couple should pay their hosts and the Koopmans insisted on paying the full amount despite the protest of Frans and Josephine that it was too much. When Samson fell ill with jaundice and was unwell for several months, his hosts fed him the fruit intended for their three children. Frans, who worked in a slaughterhouse, also managed to obtain some tender meat for the patient. After the war, the two couples remained friendly. On March 25, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Fransiscus Coumans and his wife, Maria Josephine Coumans-Diederen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
