Grietje Damsteeg, who lived on the second floor of the building, was responsible for security in the bank and the books in the library. Many of the people who borrowed books from the library were Jews and thus Grietje became acquainted with them. When Annie de Raaij-Leviticus and then later on Anna and Selma Koppens (sisters) were searching for a place to hide, Grietje sheltered them in her attic. Before long, Mr. Koppens and his third daughter, Meta, joined the group of fugitives. Finally, Mrs. de Raaijs daughter, Mary, also found refuge in Grietjes attic. All these people paid for their food, but Grietje accepted no payment for herself. On some occasions, the cramped living conditions made those in hiding so nervous that quarrels erupted. Grietje would run upstairs and pacify the group lest passersby who knew that Grietje was the only tenant in the building hear the commotion. Grietje took care of the six Jews for two and a half years. She was assisted by Mr. and Mrs. van Epen*, who brought money, food, and other provisions to the house on a weekly basis. On March 29, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Grietje Damsteeg-Snijders as Righteous Among the Nations. |
