Christian, a coal miner, and Maria had three children and only a modest income. Nevertheless, they warmly welcomed the two boys into their home and shared everything they had with them. Occasionally, Christian obtained food rations, including cans of sardines, through his work with which he could supplement the familys supplies. Since the neighbors did not know about the presence of Salomon (alias Kees) and Chanine, the brothers had to stay in their room all day long, but at night they were allowed to sit with their hosts in the living room. The Deckers family did everything possible to make the boys lives bearable. On May 5, 1944, it was decided that the boys presence in the Deckerses home was no longer safe and Jules Meesters fetched them and took them to a new hideaway. On June 20, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Christian Deckers and his wife, Maria Deckers-Krekel, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
