One of those who refused was Jan Deddens, born in t Zandt and living in Grootegast. He was punished by being imprisoned for a year in the Vught concentration camp and was then sent to Germany as a prisoner of war. Shortly after the German capitulation he was repatriated. Sergeant Dirk Boonstra*, who initiated the collective refusal, perished in Dachau. On November 14, 1988 Yad Vashem recognized Jan Deddens as Righteous Among the Nations. |
