During the war, Johanna Grootveld* assisted her. When the ban was imposed on renting rooms to Jews, the two women turned the place into a refuge for fleeing Jews. Cornelia was a member of the underground, helping a group of students who hid Jews and helping the national underground movement to save airmen, for example. Together they hid 11 Jews in the Pension Klein. Cornelias job was to get food, which, especially during the last months of the war, necessitated long treks to remote villages. Without her, the guesthouse would not have been able to function and she did her part compassionately. She looked after the people in hiding and accompanied other Jews to hiding places, first by train and then on foot when there were no more trains. According to her daughter, Cornelia, not a very strong woman, risked her health and her life throughout the war, almost every day. Cornelia derived great joy until her death from the fact that she had been able do what she did for the Jews. On March 9, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Cornelia Bernardina Rosalia DePree-Hörburger as Righteous Among the Nations. |
