Dr. Everhardus (Evert) Diemer was the editor in chief of De Rotterdammer, a daily newspaper. When the German authorities ordered him to publish antisemitic decrees Evert refused. As a result, he was forced to close down his paper, and thus lose his livelihood. However, being a lawyer by profession, he soon became a public defender in Rotterdam. In November 1943, Evert and Fenna were expecting their second child. They needed household help and decided to employ 25-year-old Margalith de Lieme. To conceal the fact that she was Jewish, they spread the rumor that she had become separated from her family in the Dutch East Indies because of the war and had also lost all her personal papers. The Diemers offered Margalith 30 guilders a week, but she refused to accept any money from her benefactors. Instead, the money was donated to the Resistance. Later in the war, when Margalith’s cousins, Jack and Judith Polak, were in trouble, the Diemers offered them shelter for several weeks. When Margalith fell ill with Meunier’s disease and had to remain in bed for a month, Fenna’s sister, Loes van Alphen-Lindeboom, helped out. In 1944, when the Germans forbade civilians in the area to travel by train, Evert walked from The Hague to Rotterdam and back twice a week. Evert’s wife, Dr. Fenna Diemer, also an attorney, gave lessons to students who were forbidden to attend university after declining to sign the `Loyaliteitsverklaring’, an oath of loyalty to the regime.
On June 20, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Everhardus Diemer and his wife, Fenna Tjeerdina Diemer-Lindeboom, as Righteous Among the Nations.
