Aantekeningen: | Last Name: Dekker First Name: Hermina Maiden Name: Oostendorp Date of Birth: 29/12/1900 Date of death: 20/03/1961 Rescuer's fate: survived Nationality: THE NETHERLANDS Gender: Female Profession: FARMER Place during the war: Kampen, Overijssel, The Netherlands Rescue Place: Kampen, Overijssel, The Netherlands Rescue mode: Hiding File number: File from the Collection of the Righteous Among the Nations Department (M.31.2/2095) Hermina Dekker-Oostendorp was a poor widow taking care of seven children. She had a farm near Kampen, Overijssel, where she hid several Jews, helped by her eldest son, Marten, who was then 24 years old and himself a member of the anti-Nazi underground. The rest of the children either knew nothing about their activities or were persuaded by their mother not to reveal the secret. In August 1942, Hermina prepared a hiding place for a couple by the name of van Zuiden-van Beek. Seven months later, the husband became ill with lung cancer. When his condition became critical, the wife, Clara van Zuiden, wanted to leave the hiding place but Hermina persuaded her to stay despite her husbands imminent death. His death posed a serious problem: how to bury him without anyone knowing. Marten Dekker stepped in and arranged for a group of ten particularly trustworthy people to carry out a late-night burial in a field behind the farm. Marten made sure that there was no sign of the grave in the field. Claras son, Levie, who had come when his father died, was asked by Hermina to stay and did so until the end of the war. Another Jewish woman came to the Dekkers in March 1943 and stayed there until the liberation. Despite the fact that she was not wealthy, Hermina only accepted a small amount of money from those she was hiding to cover the most urgent expenses for their upkeep, even though they begged to pay her more. Clara van Zuiden later recalled: After the war, reminiscences kept us together and I have never known greater friends than these courageous human beings. On July 6, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Hermina Dekker-Oostendorp and her son, Marten Dekker, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
