They found hiding places for many Jewish children and also hid children in their home, in coordination with J. J. Kalma*, a clergyman from the neighboring village of Waaxens. One of the people they sheltered was Sara Mock-Leon, who hid in their home from the spring of 1944. When Sara came to them, they already had several Jewish children staying there, including a six-year-old Jewish girl who remained with them until the liberation. Sara had a baby in the middle of the war and the van Dijks found a hiding place for the boy with the Boonstra* family in Holwerd, one of the villages in the area. Sara Mock-Leon recalled in her testimony to Yad Vashem that she had an excellent relationship with Jaap and Sipke, who would not take any money for hiding her and her baby son, risking their lives to save Jews and thwart the Germans' plans. On July 15, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Jacob van Dijk and his wife, Sipkje van Dijk-Bruinsma, as Righteous Among the Nations.
