There, a Jewish friend gave him the name of a family where he could hide. He was instructed to tell them that "Mr. Muller sent him." Charles arrived at the designated address, the home of Sjouke and Geertruida van Dijk, and was warmly welcomed. A young Jewish girl was already in hiding in their home. Sjouke and Geertuida, devout Reformed Christians who believed that it was their duty to save Jewish lives, lived with their three-year-old daughter on the first floor of a large house. They also had a separate room on the third floor. Charles spent his days with them in their living quarters and slept and studied in the third-floor room, despite the risk of being detected by neighbors while using the common staircase. When the van Dijks had visitors, Charles stayed in his upstairs room. During the course of his time in hiding with the van Dijks, they had weekend guests about eight times. On each of these occasions, Sjouke and Geertuida arranged another hiding place for their charge. In January 1944, when the van Dijks were expecting their second child, they asked Charles to leave. Charles found a new hiding place on a houseboat in Woudrichem, North Brabant. On November 5, 1991, Yad Vashem recognized Sjouke van Dijk and his wife, Geertruida Aukje van Dijk-Veenstra, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
