Despite their financial situation and the fact that they already had eight children of their own, they hid Jewish children. They took in Isaac Tropp, who came to them at the beginning of 1943 at the age of six, and shortly afterward eight-year-old Henry Blumenstein, who had been wandering around with his mother. Johannes, Sjoukje, and their children treated the fugitives very well. They were made to feel like members of the family and helped in all the work around the farm. Like the rest of the children they went to a Catholic church on Sundays in order to disguise their real identities. As was common in the area, the Dijkstras had an apartment in the attic of one of the farm buildings, and in the small kitchen of that apartment there was an entrance to a hiding place where the boys hid when a search was anticipated. Most people in the village knew the real identity of the children. The underground even killed someone who wanted to pass their names on to the police. The couple also hid two Dutch non-Jews who were wanted by the German police. The two older Dijkstra sons were old enough to be registered for forced labor in Germany, but they evaded it. Two of the Dijkstras' other children died during the period, one after an illness and one in an accident. After the war Isaac and Henry stayed in contact with four of the six remaining Dijkstra children, even after the death of the parents. On October 18, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Johannes Dijkstra and his wife, Sjoukje Dijkstra-Palstra, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
