The Troostijk family decided to escape to Switzerland in 1942, but before setting out on this dangerous journey they decided to leave their 11-month-old son, Arnold, with a local foster family. Jan and Jannetje Doets, who also lived in Arnhem, Gelderland, agreed to hide the infant. The Doets couple already had two children of their own: nine-year-old Ans and five-year-old Kees. Arnold became known as Petertje and was introduced as the child of a sick cousin. The infant quickly adjusted to life with his new family and was very well cared for. Following the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944, the Doetses became refugees and set off northwards with their children, including Arnold. After staying at some temporary addresses, they spent the last seven months of the war with relatives in Purmerend, North Holland. In May 1945, Arnold’s father, who had returned to Holland, placed an advertisement in the newspapers saying that he was looking for his son. Jan and Kannetje replied and returned the child to his parents. After the war, Arnold and his wife remained in regular contact with the Doetses, even after the death of Jan in 1984.
On June 29, 1997, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Doets and his wife, Jannetje Doets-de Waal, as Righteous Among the Nations.
