She hid Jozef Wijnkoop and his wife for almost two years, from June 1943 until the liberation. She also hid a Jewish girl, Gerda Littman, from Germany, for almost a year. Her involvement began with the idea of publishing a socialist underground newspaper, De Vonk (The Spark). David Wijnkoop, a Communist leader whose brother had been arrested in 1941 and died in Mauthausen, founded the newspaper. Greetje was a member of his editorial staff. It was David who introduced Greetje to the people she saved. Greetje promised her friends that she would help and told them they could turn to her in times of trouble. On June 20, 1943, the Wijnkoops could no longer remain at home and moved into a first-floor room in Greetjes house, in Prinsengracht, in the town center. Greetje was divorced with no children and none of her relatives or neighbors knew there were people in her home. Everything was conducted in complete secrecy. She refused to accept any rent from them---they agreed to help with living costs and that was the entire financial arrangement. The housework they shared between them. Greetje was a dancer by profession, but during the war she only gave dancing lessons because she refused to be a member of the Kulturkammer, a culture and arts organization founded by the German occupying force. In the meantime, she continued with her illegal activities at the newspaper. On January 28, 1986, Yad Vashem recognized Maria Margretha Donker as Righteous Among the Nations. |
