Berend Jan and Johanna van den Dool lived in the town of Deventer and knew Philip and Hetty Lezer and their two daughters, Lies and Mieke, through the soccer team that the two husbands played for. Berend Jan joined the Deventer branch of the LO and headed a local underground group. He and his wife, Johanna, who had one child, hid the Lezer parents and their three-month-old baby daughter, Mieke, in their home from May 10, 1943. The eldest daughter, Lies, was taken to BerendÂ’s brother Teunis (Teun) and his wife, Anna (Annie), in Hulst, Zeeland, in September 1942. Hetty, and Mieke stayed in Deventer until October 1943, when it became too dangerous because of the van den DoolsÂ’ underground activities. Berend and Johanna decided that they, too, would be taken to Teun and Annie, and Berend took them there himself. Philip Lezer stayed in Deventer for another few months, until February 1944, when he joined his wife and daughters in Hulst. There they lived under assumed names claiming to be distant relatives. Most of the people did not know they were Jews. The Lezers contributed towards their upkeep wherever they stayed. Teun and Annie were also hiding a Jewish boy called Gijs(not his real name). They all stayed until September 1944, when this part of Zeeland was liberated and they had no need to remain in hiding. Berend van den Dool was arrested on a train by the Germans during an inspection on April 25, 1944, and was executed on December 11, 1944, in Meppen.
On December 23, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Berend Jan van den Dool and his wife, Johanna Hendrika van den Dool-Kers, as Righteous Among the Nations.
On November 13, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Teunis van den Dool and his wife, Anna Suzanna van den Dool-Schmitz, as Righteous Among the Nations.
