They were caught, tortured and killed. Berend and his wife, Hendrika, (Rick) hid a Jewish child, Rachel Spitz, whose parents were hiding elsewhere. In October 1943, after her parents could no longer remain in their home, members of the underground escorted Rachel to Berend and Ricks home. They looked after her as if she were their daughter and she called them aunt and uncle. When it became unsafe, Berend was forced to move the five-year-old child, but, when escorting her to a farmhouse near the town of Almelo, Overijssel, they were both caught. The child was sent to Westerbork and remained there until the camp was liberated. Fortunately for her, when she got there, after September 13, 1944, no more people were being deported to the extermination camps and her life was spared. Rachels parents, Isaac and Rebecca Spitz-van Wezel, were told where their daughter was immediately after the liberation of Holland. In Almelo, a street was named after the two brave brothers, The Brothers van Dooren Street. On January 28, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Berend van Dooren and his wife, Hendrika Geertruida van Dooren-Kamp, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
