Bert was principally employed as a van driver and the family also tended a small vegetable garden in which they grew potatoes and vegetables for their own use. During the war, Ruth Winter, a Jew, found shelter in their home. Bert and Louise gave her a small room of her own. As a gesture of gratitude, Ruth helped Louise (also known as Wies) with the daily chores. Simultaneously, Ruth was taking a correspondence course in English, registered under her assumed name, Ria van der Veen. In addition to adopting this alias, she created a new identity for herself, the story being that she was from Rotterdam, a city that was heavily bombed in the first days of the war and, like thousands of others, had become homeless. Ruth remained with the Driessens for about two months, between November 1943 and January 1944. At this point, an SS man was shot to death by the underground near the Driessen home and, fearing the worst, Ruth was relocated across the street, in the home of Pastor E.M. Gommans*, a Catholic clergyman. On February 10, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Bert Driessen and his wife, Louise Driessen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
