Aantekeningen: | Last Name: Crum First Name: Klaas Lervanus Date of Birth: 23/10/1904 Rescuer's fate: survived Nationality: THE NETHERLANDS Gender: Male Profession: farm manager Place during the war: Rhenen, Utrecht, The Netherlands Rescue Place: Rhenen, Utrecht, The Netherlands Rescue mode: Hiding File number: File from the Collection of the Righteous Among the Nations Department (M.31.2/10919) In the fall of 1942, the Cohen Paraira family from Scheveningen decided not to follow orders to report for 'work in the East' but instead to try and find hiding places. Mother Menucha and daughter Ellis (now Elisheva Lehman), born in 1924, managed to find shelter with Wopke and Heiltje Kooistra* in Utrecht (prov. Utrecht), who had room for two people only. Father David and son Bob, (now Avraham), born in 1926, located a hiding address with Klaas and Lambartha Crum in Rhenen, (prov. Utrecht). In the spring of 1943, however, Menucha so missed her husband and son, that she stopped eating. At their wits' end, they turned to the Crums, pleading for her and Ellis to join David and Bob. To their luck, the Crums agreed. The Cohen Parairas were allocated two rooms in the large Crum home, where they stayed nearly all the time, as they could not go outside at all. No one was to know about their presence in the house. Son Cor Crum, then nine, was instructed not to talk about them and not to bring friends home. In order to pass the time, Ellis taught Cor to play the accordion, whereas David frequently made drawings with him. Fearing house searches, a special hiding area was prepared in the house. When an acquaintance who had been taken into forced labor at the Atlantik Wall unexpectedly came to the Crums on furlough, they instantly made rearrangements in the house so that the Cohen Parairas would be out of sight. Klaas and Bartha took full responsibility for the daily care of the four Cohen Parairas, sharing their rations of food. In September 1944, with the failed Market Garden military operation, the Crums, along with all residents of Arnhem and the immediate surroundings were ordered to evacuate. They could not possibly take the Cohen Parairas along but they did find the same Kooistras from Utrecht willing to take in all four, where they stayed until the liberation of the city in May 1945. Some years after the war, the Cohen Parairas emigrated to Israel and contact with the Crums was lost. Only in 2005, Cor and Ellis found each other through the intervention of Yad Vashem, and since then have kept in touch. On October 22, 2006, Yad Vashem recognized Klaas Crum and Lambartha Margareta Crum-Sanders as Righteous Among the Nations. |
