By July 1942, Esther and Abraham, the two eldest children of Rosaline Groenteman (later Polak-Speyer) had been deported and her husband, Emanuel, had gone into hiding. Dr. Philip Fiedeldij Dop*, who worked closely with the Amsterdam Student Group*, visited Rosaline's house and told her to take her daughter Sonja to the corner of a certain street and hand her over to a student. Rosaline then went into hiding herself without knowing who took her daughter and to where. Initially, Sonja was taken from one hiding place to another and eventually she became the foster daughter of Hendrik and Annegien (Annie) van Daalen in Arnhem, Gelderland. The van Daalens had to keep Sonja well hidden because their neighbors knew that they were childless. Despite all the miseries of war, Sonja had a wonderful time with them. "They took care of me as if I were their own child," she wrote in her testimony to Yad Vashem. "I still love them as my own parents." In September 1944, the city of Arnhem was evacuated. Hendrik, Annie, and Sonja traveled on a bicycle with a small cart to Apeldoorn, where they stayed with the Schut family, who owned a sawmill, and later with the Mateman* family, who were hiding George Prins. After the war, Rosaline discovered that Esther and Abraham had been killed in a death camp. She then went to Fiedeldij Dop, who told her that Mr. de Wit in Den Bosch would know where Sonja was. After a long and extensive search, and with the mediation of the Red Cross and the Reformed Church, Rosaline found the de Wits and then the van Daalens. She found her daughter healthy and well provided for and she and her daughter maintained an excellent relationship with Hendrik and Annie thereafter.
On March 29, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrik Anton van Daalen and his wife, Annegien van Daalen-Speelman, as Righteous Among the Nations.
