At first, the Jewish couple turned down the offer, but when the Germans ordered all Jews over the age of six to wear a yellow star, Mr. and Mrs. Reindorf sent their young child to the Dael family. In their home, Bram-Jaap led a relatively normal life, only hiding in the cellar in times of acute danger. In the meantime, Mr. and Mrs. Reindorf went into hiding elsewhere. However, they were betrayed and sent to Bergen-Belsen. The Germans also found a photograph of Bram-Jaap and commenced an intensive hunt for him. During this period, Bram-Jaap was relocated with Bauke Nales*, but after the danger subsided, he returned to the Daels. After the war, Mrs. Reindorf returned from Bergen-Belsen (where her husband had been killed) and lived together with her son and his foster family for another year. On October 3, 1973, Yad Vashem recognized Raymond Placide Guillaume Marie Dael and his wife, Mia Dael-Schram, as Righteous Among the Nations |
