Aantekeningen: | Last Name: Haar ter First Name: Martha Amalia Maiden Name: Craandijk Alias: MAKKIE Date of Birth: 27/04/1903 Date of death: 16/03/1986 Rescuer's fate: survived Nationality: THE NETHERLANDS Gender: Female Place during the war: Heemstede, Noordholland, The Netherlands Rescue Place: Heemstede, Noordholland, The Netherlands Rescue mode: Hiding File number: File from the Collection of the Righteous Among the Nations Department (M.31.2/1743) After her husband died, before the war, Martha (Makkie) ter Haar, originally from Haarlem, was left to look after a family of six, which included four sons aged four to 14 and a live-in maid, Hanna Miersch, living in Heemstede, North Holland. In December 1943, Makkie was asked to hide a one-year-old Jewish child, Uri Rozelaar. Before agreeing, she first asked her right hand, Hanna, if she would help bring up another son. Hanna, who had been born in Germany, immediately consented, eager to do something that might offset, even if in a small way, the enormous crimes perpetrated by her countrymen. For the remainder of the war, which was almost 18 months, the two women looked after Uri. Makkie, who knew where his parents were hiding, visited the Rozelaars once to fill them in about their sons development. She also kept a diary about him so that his parents, when they got their son back, would know what had transpired during the childs infancy. The two women considered Uri very much a part of the family, and Hanna, in particular, felt very close to him. Their treatment of the child was exemplary and he was returned to his parents happy and healthy. At the end of the war, the Rozelaars spent two weeks at Makkies home so they and their child could get to know one another with as little trauma for reunion as possible. During the war, Makkie hid another person in her home: Lili van Cleef-Simon, a close friend who stayed for three months in 1944 until she was able to go back to her original hiding place. On March 31, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Martha Amalia ter Haar-Craandijk and Johanna Miersch as Righteous Among the Nations. |
