Born and educated in the Netherlands, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and the Art Students League in New York City. He lived in Basking Ridge 48 years and retired from Rutgers University after many years as a technical research assistant in ceramics engineering. He continued to work as an artist after retirement. He is survived by a son, Gunthar of Basking Ridge; a daughter, Johanna Rooda of Skillman; a sister, Hans van Couwelaar of Wittelte, Netherlands; a brother, Friedtjof of Amsterdam; and a grandson, Colin Throm of Skillman. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Jan. 20 at Kimble Funeral Home, 1 Hamilton Ave., Princeton. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Audubon Society or Raster Trust of Millington, N.J.
