In summer 1943, the parents met the Buenk* family in Doetinchem. This family was already hiding Jews so they took the Dessaurs to the home of Reverend Theodoor Frederikse and his wife, Annie, in Vorchten, Gelderland. Theodoor and Annie were dedicated to the task of helping persecuted Jews even at the risk of being arrested. Hiding in their home was not always safe because of the frequent raids. Consequently, the Dessaurs often had to move temporarily to other addresses. However, the Frederikses never let their wards move without firstly checking out the new hideout themselves. The Dessaurs always returned to the Frederikses home when the danger subsided. Theodoor also found out where the Dessaurs daughter was hidden (with Geert Migchels* family in Slagharen, Overijssel) and contrived a way for her to see her parents. During the war, the Frederikses also hid ten-year-old J. Slager of Enschede and the two Heilbron brothers from Doetinchem. Only the Frederikses parents, a sister, and a few Resistance people knew that they were hiding Jews. They refused to accept any money and made conditions as comfortable as possible for their wards. In May 1944, when Theodoor was transferred to work in Valkenswaard, North Brabant, the Frederikses took Rosa Louise Dessaur with them. Their other wards moved to other addresses; Salomon Dessaur moved to Nunspeet and later to Epe. Rosa Louise stayed with the Frederikses until the liberation of the southern part of the Netherlands in September 1944. Throughout the war, Theodoor never shied away from voicing his opinion from his pulpit and was also part of a chain of clergymen who helped channel information across Holland, to Switzerland. After the war, the Dessaurs and their wartime rescuers maintained a close friendship. On March 4, 1985, Yad Vashem recognized Theodoor Christiaan Frederikse and his wife, Annie Frederikse-Oskamp, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
