In November 1940, Lambertus Cannegieter and Anna Kappeyne van de Coppello, both students at the University of Leiden, South Holland, took part in the protest strike against the dismissal of Professor Meyers, a Jew. In 1942, Lambertus became a minister. Later that year, he married Anna and they moved into a modest house in Oosthuizen, North Holland. In July 1942, Mr. and Mrs. de Kadt saw no way out and killed themselves and their four eldest children. They had assumed that their baby, who was born in October 1941, would be safe. However, this assumption proved to be wrong and in February 1943 David-Jan de Kadt and his nurse found refuge with the Cannegieters. Lambertus and Anna's house was small and after the birth of their first child, in July of that year, David-Jan and the nurse were moved to another address. In November 1943, Lambertus was offered a ministry in St. Jacobi Parochie, Friesland. The young Cannegieter family moved there, into an old, drafty parish house without plumbing. After awhile, they welcomed 12-year-old Leny Cohen into their home. Leny lived under a fictitious name and posed as a cousin of the Cannegieters. Since she did not look particularly Jewish, she was allowed outside, but she did not attend school. To justify the fact that she remained at home, the story was spread that she was not capable enough to attend public school. In reality, her hosts taught her Latin, Greek, history, mathematics, and other subjects, using the books from her previous school in Deventer, Overijssel. Leny stayed with the Cannegieters for two and a half years. Between 1943 and 1945, Lambertus also found hiding places for several other Jews. In one instance, when no hideout could be found for Mrs. Spiers, who was expecting a baby, Lambertus invited her into his house, where she stayed until ten days after her baby was born. Except for the doctor who assisted with the birth, no one else knew of Lambertus and Anna's activities.
On November 3, 1993, Yad Vashem recognized the Reverend Lambertus Cannegieter and his wife, Anna Habbijna Cannegieter-Kappeyne van de Coppello, as Righteous Among the Nations.
