In 1938 she went on a Kindertransport to the Netherlands. She finally ended up in a Youth Aliyah home in Loosdrecht, from where the Westerweel* group began its rescue activities. Lilly later moved to Amsterdam and in February 1943 started working in the crèche opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg. She was soon deported to Westerbork with all the kindergarten children but managed to escape the transit camp while working outside in a laundry. Through Westerweel* group activists, Lilly was brought to Sevenum, Limburg, to the village inn belonging to the Verreith* family. A while later, Piet Arts* took her to the home of Jan and Nellie van Enckevort, where she remained hidden until the liberation of the southern part of Holland. Jan and Nellie were motivated to help by human compassion. They did not receive any payment for their deeds, yet took excellent care of Lilly for two years. During the war, the van Enckevorts also hid other Jews for shorter periods of time, among them Ruth Meir. On March 9, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Jan van Enckevort and his wife, Nellie van Enckevort, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
