Rescue Story
Lange, Paulus W.R. & Ditje (Luyten)
Paulus Lange was a member of Joop Westerweel’s* underground group. When the Germans arrested the Westerweels, Paulus and Ditje looked after their six-year-old daughter, Martha, until the end of the war. Paulus and Ditje had five children and hid many Jews in their home for various lengths of time. Towards the end of the war, there were no fewer than 17 Jews hidden in their home at one time. For 18 months the Langes hid a 17-year-old Jewish boy, David Neis, who was born in Germany and was a halutz at the Hachshara in Loosdrecht. In August 1942, a day before a number of the halutzim were summoned for deportation, all the youngsters managed to hide thanks to the cooperation between the Hachshara leaders, Yoachin Simon (Shushu) and Menachem Pinkhof, and Joop Westerweel. David Neis was taken to the Langes’ home in Wassenaar, South Holland, by one of the group’s members and stayed there until February 1944. While in hiding David was able to study mathematics and physics and corresponded with his school under the name of Hendrick Jan van Prins. Under pressure from Joop Westerweel himself, and by decision of the underground leadership, David eventually fled Holland and crossed the Belgian and French borders into Spain and on to Palestine, even though the Langes thought it would have been best for him to stay with them until the end of the war. They treated him as their eldest son and like a brother to their children. The Langes were driven to help persecuted Jews by humanitarian principles. In doing so, they risked their own lives and lived under very stressful conditions. David Neis, who reached Palestine in 1944, and later emigrated to the United States, kept in touch with the Langes and visited them with his family several times.
On June 26, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Paulus Lange and his wife, Ditje Lange-Luyten, as Righteous Among the Nations.
