Rescue Story
Thomassen, Josephina Hubertina Maria (Teunissen) & Henricus Mechtildis Jozef & Anna Matthea Maria (Deckers) Thyssen, Lucia Cornelia Josephina (Thomassen) The Westerweel* group whisked Auguste (Gustel) Nussbaum together with her sister Sophie away from the Loosdrecht children’s home in August 1942. They were hidden in an empty house in Amsterdam from where they were forced to flee. Gustel was finally brought to Josephina Thomassen in Roermond, Limburg, in November 1943. Josephina was a widow living with her daughter, Lucia (later Thyssen), in an area, which was declared a war zone by the Germans in late 1944. Josephina was forced to evacuate and took her daughter and the young fugitive, Gustel, to live with her son, Henricus (Harry), and his wife, Anna, in another part of Roermond. Harry Thomassen was a baker and the couple lived with their two children as well as four illegal fugitives, three of whom were Jewish. In February 1945, the Germans ordered Harry and Anna to evacuate to northern Holland. The Thomassens were unwilling to move because of their illegal guests and Harry offered to work as a baker for the Germans, to which they agreed. Nevertheless, he was asked to move to another part of the town and the hidden guests, including Lucia, stayed in a dry well under the house for 17 days and nights until the liberation on March 1, 1945. Throughout this time, Lucia served as a go-between with the rest of her family, who did their utmost to keep the fugitives alive, supplying them with food and clothing. On January 11, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Josephina Hubertina Maria Thomassen-Teunissen, her daughter, Lucia Cornelia Josephina Thyssen-Thomassen, her son, Henricus Mechtildis Jozef Thomassen, and his wife, Anna Matthea Maria Thomassen-Deckers, as Righteous Among the Nations.
